SourceOne’s 95% SterolSource® Phytosterols contain the same major sterols that are the basis for the FDA health claim*: sitosterol, campesterol and stigmasterol, in quantities that exceed the minimum required content. SterolSource® Phytosterols are all natural plant-derived, clinically proven and safe cholesterol-lowering ingredients. Sterols are a family of fat-like substances, including sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, and other naturally occurring sterols. Phytosterols are plant sterols structurally similar to cholesterol that act in the intestine to lower cholesterol absorption.
The term "phytosterols" covers plant sterols and plant stanols. Plant sterols are naturally occurring substances present in the diet principally as minor components of vegetable oils. Plant stanols, occurring in nature at a lower level, are hydrogenation compounds of sterols. Both have attracted attention because of their potential benefits in reducing serum and LDL cholesterol levels. Because they have very low systemic absorption and are already present in healthy diets, increasing the intake of phytosterols may be a practical way to reduce coronary heart disease with minimum risk. Foods containing phytosterols have been shown to help cut cholesterol, and the US Food and Drug Administration has endorsed these products "as part of a dietary strategy to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.”

Clinical Science:
Starting in the early 1950’s, phytosterols were found to prevent absorption of dietary cholesterol. Since then, a persuasive body of evidence supporting the cholesterol lowering effectiveness of sterols and sterol esters has been amassed. In September 2000, based on the overwhelming evidence on sterol clinical trials, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a health claim that permits statements that phytosterols may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.
Clinical studies show that plant sterols lower total and LDL cholesterol by blocking the absorption of cholesterol from food into the body. FDA has concluded that products containing at least 0.4g of free plant sterol eaten twice a day with meals for a daily total intake of at least 0.8g as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. Dozens of studies have proven the cholesterol lowering effect of sterols. The wide variety of study designs and subjects leads to a range in typical cholesterol reduction. A review of the studies indicates that a cholesterol reduction of ten percent can be reasonably achieved by the addition of 1.3 gram of total sterol esters or 800 mg free sterols to the diet, consumed in two servings per day.
