Joint Health
As many as 85 percent of all Americans will experience some kind of joint pain during their adult lives. This includes conditions like arthritis (or joint inflammation), tendinitis, and bursitis. Joint inflammation has also been tied to a host of chronic conditions from diabetes and cardiovascular conditions to Alzheimer’s disease, asthma and depression, and even to some forms of cancer.
Good joint health requires optimal nutrition and keeping a healthy weight to relieve excess stress on the joints. Exercise helps as well, especially exercises that strengthen the muscles around the joints. Avoiding risk factors like smoking and stress also contribute to joint health.
A number of supplements can also contribute to joint health. Studies have shown that omega-3 essential fatty acids help promote the body's anti-inflammatory response and block the activity of an enzyme that breaks down joint cartilage. Polymethoxylated flavones (PMFs) and other flavonoids have been shown to demonstrate anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the activity of inflammation-promoting "adhesion" molecules. Chondroitin, a naturally-occurring molecule, helps keep cartilage, the connective tissue that cushions the joints, healthy by absorbing fluids into the connective tissue. In some studies, it also has proven effective in helping to treat pain in osteoarthritis patients. Olive leaf extract is another supplement that research has shown can help minimize pain from chronic joint pain.
