Inflammation

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a substance found in blood that is a marker for inflammation in the body. High levels of CRP have been associated with an increased risk of heart disease in many studies, and some researchers believe CRP may be a more important indicator of heart disease risk than high LDL cholesterol. In fact, about of all heart attacks and strokes in the United States occur among those with relatively normal cholesterol levels, and inflammation response tied to CRP may be a primary factor.

Diagnosing high CRP levels and taking steps to help keep them low are important ways to mitigate cardiovascular risk associated with inflammation. The American Heart Association recommends CRP testing when doctors aren't sure how to treat patients with an intermediate risk, such as a 10-20 percent risk of having a heart attack in the next 10 years, and some physicians recommend a CRP test every time patients have their cholesterol levels checked. Most experts recommend eating an anti-inflammation diet - high in fruits, vegetables, whole-grain fiber, and non-meat proteins (including fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids), low in saturated fats and processed foods - to help.

A number of nutritional supplements may also be of help, in addition to omega-3s. Coenzyme Q10 has received particular attention, with studies citing its potential role in preventing the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Other studies have shown that higher levels of CoQ10 are associated with enhanced benefits from inflammation treatment, especially in combination with Vitamin E. Tongkat Ali’s relationship to energy boosts in some people can help burn fat and contribute to mitigating inflammation. Some studies have shown the potential of resveratrol’s anti-inflammatory action in various conditions, and others have shown interest in French Maritime pine bark’s possible contributions. And a number of studies have spoken to the role of vitamin D, which in some cases has been associated with reduced inflammation in critically ill patients, who typically are vitamin D-deficient. Depressed vitamin D is also associated with increased inflammation and its related risks in otherwise healthy people, according to other research.
