Heart Health

Heart disease is the world's main cause of death. Together with stroke, it is responsible for almost 17 million lives a year worldwide, one in every three deaths. Deaths from cardiovascular disease are expected to rise to 25 million by 2020, accounting for almost 40% of all deaths. In 2005, nearly 800,000 Americans died from heart disease or stroke, more than 650,000 of them from cardiovascular disease alone. In 2006, heart disease cost Americans more than $258 billion, including health care services, medications, and lost productivity.

Many factors affect heart health, but about three-quarters of cardiovascular disease can be attributed to conventional risk factors: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, poor diets, and diabetes. Other non-changeable risk factors include gender, aging, and family history.

The American Heart Association advises that healthy eating, regular exercise, and maintaining a healthy weight are critical to heart health. Reducing cholesterol by ten percent, for example, can lower the risk of coronary heart disease, from nearly 20 percent in people 75-84 to more than 50 percent among those aged 35-44. This is especially important as the number of adults with high cholesterol is forecast to grow by 20 percent in the next decade.

A number of supplements may be applicable to heart health. Omega-3 fatty acids have been studied regularly for their possible associated with reduction of inflammation, cholesterol, and triglycerides. Coenzyme Q10 helps boost oxygen in the heart and is used to treat coronary heart problems. The antioxidant properties of tocotrienols/tocopherols and Vitamin Es are regularly studied for their possible association with improved circulation. Polymethoxylated flavones and green tea have antioxidant effects that may be applicable to heart health. French Maritime pine bark, in some studies, has been shown to contribute to heart health in diabetic patients. Studies associated with the renowned Framingham Heart Study established that Vitamin D deficiency is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. And olive leaf extract, according to other studies, may contribute to reduction in cholesterol and blood pressure rates in some patients.
