Eye Health

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), one in three Americans has some form of vision-impairing eye condition by age 65. Many don’t realize they have an eye problem, because there may be no warning symptoms or they associate declining eyesight with age. But a lack of awareness of basic eye health affects more than just vision. Many people with diabetes are at risk of blindness - 25 times greater than those without diabetes. Annual eye exams, according to AAO, can detect diabetic eye disease, help millions preserve their eyesight, and help detect other conditions like hypertension, brain tumors, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Other eye health-related conditions include glaucoma (the leading cause of blindness among African Americans), which affects more than three million Americans, macular degeneration (which affects about ten million), and age-related cataracts.

In addition to regular eye examinations, diet, exercise, and lifestyle affect eye health. A diet high in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids, and low in cholesterol and saturated fats is helpful, particularly for people with diabetes. Studies have omega-3s to help prevent age-related blindness, macular degeneration, and other eye conditions, and aid vision in infants. High intake of tocotrienols that some studies have associated with lower risk of type-2 diabetes can also help. Pine bark extract is often recommended for various eye conditions caused by blood vessel damage, such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Some carotenoids, such as zeaxanthin and lutein, are associated with eye health. And many eye doctors recommend Vitamin D to help prevent against age-related macular degeneration.
